Amtrak ALC-42 Qualification Trains In The Snow. On Wednesday, January 7, 2026, Amtrak operated a pair of round-trip ALC-42 Crew Qualification trains between Albany-Rensselaer, NY, and Rhinecliff, NY using AMTK 370 and 374 with a single AmFleet cafe car in order to operate at the maximum allowable speed. The Siemens ALC-42 is part of the new generation of diesel power on the Amtrak roster, similar to the SC-44, ALC-42E, the future SC-42DM order, and other variants. At the moment, there are no revenue trains in this area that use the ALC-42. But, as more units arrive and are prepared for service, and more crews are qualified on the equipment, the date of their revenue debut moves closer.
