Diesel On The Branch. On Tuesday, February 10, 2026, Amtrak Train 125 was led by AMTK 98 (P42DC) from Springfield, Massachusetts, to Washington D.C. While the normal practice is to change the diesel for an electric-powered ACS-64 in New Haven, Connecticut, the prolonged cold weather has affected the fleet, and this unusual occurance happened twice yesterday as the Vermonter also had a diesel for its full journey. With temperatures projected to rise above freezing in the New York Metropolitan area today, the long-awaited thaw appears to be in sight. The train is seen just south of Longwood Avenue in the Bronx, New York, next to the Bruckner Expressway (Interstate 278) and the CSX Oak Point Yard as it travels down the Amtrak-owned Hell Gate Line, also known as "The Branch". The legacy catenary gantries were built by the New York Connecting Railroad and are being replaced as part of the upgrades to the line that will bring MTA Metro-North Railroad trains to Penn Station on this route.
