A Spring Afternoon On The Bear Mountain Bridge

On Sunday, March 29, 2026, it was windy and sunny. The 'stick season' phase of the spring was still very much in effect, but on the flip side, this creates fewer shadows for photographers to deal with. The afternoon parade on the Hudson Line was filled with good targets to capture from some elevated trackside time with Amtrak and MTA Metro-North Railroad, including an SC42-DM, both Lake Shore Limiteds, and Amtrak 46 (50th Ann).

Notes:

1 - Back-to-back P32AC-DM/P42DCs lead the 'reverse consist' from Albany-Rensselaer, NY (ALB) to New York Penn Station. After running the locos around overnight, they will lead to ALB the next day, where the train will be wyed (turned around), and two new locomotives will replace this power for the rest of the trip to Chicago, Illinois. This power arrangement and the reverse consist have been standard for the past several months during construction on the East River Tubes.

2 - During this construction, Empire Service trains (not the Lake Shore) will be double-ended in this area as they are not looped in Sunnyside.
