Cab Car Leading. Seven years ago today, on June 17, 2018, Amtrak Train 63 (Maple Leaf) was an on-time 0640 departure from Grand Central Terminal in New York for Toronto, Ontario. It is seen finding the pockets of sun not blocked by tall buildings at this hour on the Park Avenue Viaduct. During that summer, Amtrak operated all of its Empire Service out of Grand Central, which allowed the Spuyten Duyvil Bridge to undergo significant repairs. Due to limited clearances in some of the tunnels and Amtrak's P32AC-DM fleet not having emergency exit nose hatches at the time, MARC cab cars were leased to have 3-sided egress and were placed in front of the locomotives. A dedicated effort by Amtrak shops modified enough P32s by mid-summer that the cab cars were returned to Maryland before the 'visits' to Grand Central were complete.
