Amtrak Sunset Limited - Inspection Train, Gulfport, Mississippi

Amtrak In Gulfport. As Amtrak celebrates the first anniversary of its Mardi Gras service today, August 18, 2026, it is a fitting time to look back to February 18, 2016, when an Amtrak Sunset Limited demonstration train covered this route. Led by P40DC AMTK 822 and P42DC 145, the ten-car train covered the portion of the former Sunset Limited route from New Orleans, Louisiana, to Jacksonville, Florida, over two days. The train is seen here stopped in Gulfport, Mississippi, at the former platform. Service along this route was suspended in 2005 due to Hurricane Katrina, making this special run the only Amtrak train to travel these tracks until the crew qualification runs for the inauguration of Mardi Gras service.
