Reopening Soon....Carnegie Deli
The original location of Carnegie Delicatessen & Restaurant opened in 1937 and closed on December 31, 2016. Their motto was "If you can finish your meal, we've done something wrong."
The deli was known for all of the things that NYC Jewish delis are known for - pastrami, corned beef, chopped liver, and lox. They were also well known for their cheesecake. The walls were lined with photos of famous visitors, and another generation will know that Bowzer and Sha Na Na and Arthur Fonzarelli eat here together because of Adam Sandler's "The Chanukah Song".
While the main location closed in 2016, there were several popups and smaller locations still in business, as well as mail order service. Until last week, only the location inside Madison Square Garden was still serving.
This week, an almost identical replica of this neon sign appeared on the building at 834 7th Ave, New York, NY. This was formerly site of the Stage Deli, which also opened in 1937, but closed on November 29, 2012. It is unknown what incarnation this will take, whether it will be a full fledged permanent restaurant or a pop-up, but news sources have confirmed that it is planned to open this fall.
