Chesapeake & Ohio 1308, Huntington, West Virginia

Off to Ohio. On Tuesday, October 18, 2022, former Chesapeake & Ohio Railway 2-6-6-2 No. 1308 (built by Baldwin,1949) sat on outdoor display in a Huntington, West Virginia park, as it had for over 60 years. Although the "Mallet" had been retired in 1956 and donated to the Collis P. Huntington Railroad Historical Society, the chapter’s decline eventually led to the dispersion of its historic assets. Ultimately, the locomotive was acquired by the Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum in Sugarcreek, Ohio, where it arrived today, Tuesday, November 3, 2026. C&O 1308 is famous for being the next-to-last Class I mainline steam locomotive built by Baldwin, with the very last being its celebrated sister unit, C&O 1309—a former longtime resident of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum that currently runs on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. The Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum, which welcomes No. 1308 as its 25th steam locomotive and its very first articulated engine, has committed to preserving the historic giant and keeping it on the National Register of Historic Places.
