10 Pics From 10 Years Ago Today. The (Washington) DC Streetcar opened to the public on February 27, 2016, marking the return of trolley cars to the District of Columbia for the first time since 1962. The next year, it reached its peak ridership and held at a little over a million annual rides from 2017 to 2019. While intended to revitalize local neighborhoods, the system never constructed any of the 5 proposed additional routes that would have created a streetcar network. It suffered a dramatic loss in patronage due to the pandemic and its collateral effects on local businesses. Service has been reduced since January, and the final day of operations is planned for March 31, 2026.
