Debry, CT 350th Anniversary
Derby Turns 350. On Saturday, May 31, 2025, The Shore Line Trolley Museum and The Connecticut Fire Museum and Motorcoach Museum joined the City of Derby, CT to celebrate the 350th Anniversary of its foundation at a street fair.
The Trolley Museum brought “The Derby”, an electric motor created by electric railway pioneer Charles Van Depoele and built by Pullman in 1887. This locomotive once operated in the streets of Derby for the Derby Horse Railroad, and is considered the oldest surviving North American electric locomotive to have been used commercially. As such, the motor has become something of a celebrity, traveling across the northeastern United States.
The Motorcoach Museum drove Connecticut Railway & Lighting Company 504 (TDH 4519 1572, GM, 6-7/1967) under its own power to and from their restoration garage in East Windsor, Connecticut. During its service life, CR&L 504 operated in this area, and has since become an integral part of the museum's operating collection. This kind of bus is nicknamed "New Look" or "Fishbowl", and almost 45,000 were built in the U.S. and Canada between 1959-1985.
