100 Years Of Greyhound

100 Years Of Greyhound

In 1914, the founders of Greyhound bought a "Hupmobile" and began transporting miners. Eventually the founders acquired more buses and routes and bought up other companies and formed Greyhound Lines. It would eventually become an international company with operations in the US, Canada, the UK, Saudi Arabia, and others. The company was a symbol of segregation in the Unite States as they abided by local laws wherever they operated, but also became a symbol of desegregation with the Freedom Riders. By the 1980s they owned the companies that made their buses, by the 1990s they were bankrupt. The pandemic was particularly hard on this industry, and today what was once a symbol of interstate travel is a shell of its former self. In 2014, the company held a nationwide "Celebrating 100 Years On The Open Road Tour", and one stop was at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on June 7, 2014. In recent years, the company has changed owners several times, and the historic fleet has mostly been sold.
