Take a Ride on the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway. This cable-powered, standard-gauge line in Chattanooga, Tennessee, is one mile long and uses two cars that meet at a passing siding. It features a maximum grade of 72.7%, making it one of the steepest passenger railways in the world. The line first opened on November 16, 1895, and has operated with minimal disruption—except for a prolonged outage from December 2024 to July 2025 due to a rockslide. Cars travel between the bottom station in St. Elmo and the top of Lookout Mountain at East Brow Road. The railway carries approximately 100,000 riders per year. Photos from August 1, 2015.
