Red Lining. A standard 6-car set of Red Line Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority - MBTA cars led by 01839 (Series #3, Bombardier, 1993-1994) is Ashmont bound approaching Columbia Road near the JFK/UMass Station on April 30, 2017 with the Boston skyline in the background. These cars were part of an 86 stainless steel–bodied car order (69 feet 6 inches long/10 feet 2 inches wide) that was built in Canada and Barre, Vermont to replace the 1400s. In 2024, one might find any of the 5 series of MBTA purchased cars operating on the Red Line (1500s-1900s) as the process of accepting the Springfield, Massachusetts CRRC built 252 car-order of Series 5 cars proceeds and is planned to ultimately replace the entire fleet.
