Good evening from the Harlem Line!
With only two through trains from Grand Central Terminal to Wassaic, catching one of the heritage wraps can be difficult, but it was worth it to make the drive when the NYC unit was assigned.
As opposed to the densely populated and multi-track Hudson Line where I spend most of my trackside time, the upper single track Harlem Line has far more small towns and rural scenes that blend into the sedate environment. As Otto Vondrak reminded all of us the other day, it was this week in 1972 that Penn Central cut the line just north of here at Dover Plains, leaving the commuters who had traveled in from Millerton or Chatham that morning to find their own way home from Dover Plains. In 2002, Metro-North partially corrected this unfortunate decision by restoring service to Wassaic.
