MNCW 401 and 402, BN Yard, Kingsbridge, Bronx, New York

Bananas at BN. On April 22, 2015, the distinctly yellow MTA Metro-North Railroad MNCW 402 (BL14CG) passed by BN Yard in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx, New York while towing a "maxi-bomb" (7 Bombardier coaches) with MNCW 206 (P32AC-DM). Using a work diesel to tow a set with a mechanical problem is standard practice. But at the same time, identical twin MNCW 401 was getting ready to depart after bringing a work train to the yard. These locomotives were purchased for tasks related to East Side Access construction. Since the completion of that project, they are now used in general work service. These differ from the Brookville BL20GH/GHM in that they have 1,400 versus 2,000 horsepower, but also do not have an HEP generator. At this time, both units still had the as delivered paint scheme with blue and white stripes as well as the "CoGeneration" logo on the side, since then 401 is yellow with MNR logos only. BN Yard is used by MNR for refuse removal from GCT and delivery of work supplies. It is one of two sections of track that remain from the New York Central Putnam Line, the other is the wye at Putnam Junction in Brewster, New York. Neither is part of a passenger line, and nearly all of the former route in between is now a trail.
