Charger & New Heritage Locomotive Transferred At Night

On the night of Friday, June 13, 2025, MTA Metro-North Railroad's PMMO (PM MOtt Haven) crew towed SC42-DM MNCW 301 and P32AC-DM MNCW 203 (Two-Tone M Central Heritage) from the North White Plains Yard to Croton Harmon using MNCW 104 (GP35r). Both units were used during a public relations event on Friday to unveil the new paint scheme on MNCW 203, the railroad's 7th heritage unit. Unlike the previous 6 heritage units, this unit was painted, and not wrapped. The design commemorates a pre-Metro-North scheme used by the MTA for seven FL9s that were rebuilt by Morrison Knudsen in the late 1970s, with the "Central" denoting their planned use on the former New York Central Line (Harlem & Hudson) in New York State. The unit is rumored to be making its public debut soon. Though not visible in this video, MNCW 301 recently had an MTA nose logo added. The SC42-DM is the newest model of locomotive ordered by the railroad and is currently undergoing testing before entering revenue service.

The MTA Metro-North Railroad/Siemens SC42-DM dual mode locomotive is one of 33 on order to start to replace the railroad's General Electric P32s. Though similar to the all diesel design of the SC-44 and ALC-42, these locomotives also had to go to the testing center in Pueblo, Colorado for full evaluation before delivery to Metro-North. The locomotives are much quieter than their predecessors, and also significantly more fuel efficient while providing more power. On this night the train operated both in diesel mode and at least one trip in electric (third rail) mode. While the (present) GE P32AC-DM fleet changes from electric to diesel mode around the Harlem-125 Street Station, MNR has stated that this locomotive is designed to operate on third rail to the Croton Harmon area, where electrification ends.
