Geep Madness. It was 2 years ago today on July 3, 2023, that NJ Transit's equipment decision offered a special gift to railfans during the July 4th holiday weekend. NJTR 4109 was NJ Transit's first heritage unit. Built by EMD as GP40-P CNJ 3677 in 10/1968, it was part of a 13 locomotive order for the Central of New Jersey Railroad's commuter operations, at a time when the New York & Long Branch (today's North Jersey Coast Line) was jointly operated with Penn Central Railroad. The locomotives were sponsored by the New Jersey Department of Transportation and had steam generators for passenger service. It is seen crossing the Manasquan River from Brielle to Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey. The unit was rebuilt with Head End Power and later overhauled and repainted as part of NJ Transit's 40th Anniversary. These days, it can normally be found today operating out of Hoboken Terminal, making this visit to the home rails of the North Jersey Coast Line (NJCL) a real treat.
