Nostalgia Special To Coney Island. On Saturday, July 19, 2025, the New York Transit Museum and MTA New York City Transit operated its annual "Beach Bound Coney Island" Excursion. A five-car train of R9s was bracketed by R1 381 and R9 1802. This class of cars, built between 1928-1940, was the mainstay of the Independent Subway, and eventually 1,803 compatible cars were built. The cars can usually be seen operating during the holiday specials, but also make appearances for ticketed events like this throughout the year.
