MTA NYCT Subway R255 Delivery Via Linden Yard Flyover

On Thursday, May 21, 2026, MTA NYCT Subway B Division Work Train 24 transferred brand new R255 HL024 from Linden Yard in Brooklyn, New York, to Westchester Yard in the Bronx, New York. The move was bracketed by HL008 and HL0018, two R255s that have been accepted and are part of the active fleet. Linden Yard is a work yard that stores materials and work trains, and is one of two connections between the NYCT Subway and the National Rail Network. This flyover track (Track P5) connects the yard to the Junius Street Station (Track M), and is one of the few pieces of trackage without third rail on the system. The locomotive had arrived on a barge at the NYNJ Rail Yard on 65 Street in Brooklyn, and was then transferred by New York and Atlantic Railway to MTA NYCT Subway via the LIRR Bay Ridge Line.

The Wabtec WAB6HYB/R-255 is a 675hp hybrid work locomotive designed for the demands and clearances of the New York City Subway system. The diesel engine charges the batteries, which will allow the locomotive to operate for 8 hours. This will allow a new generation of locos to pull work trains through the subway with a much lower level of emissions. Before this order arrived, the MTA NYCT Subway rostered 90 diesel engines that operate on non-revenue work trains, and is adding this 25-unit order of R-255s, as well as a supplemental 45-unit order, and the 10 R-77Es under conversion to R-257s by CAD Railway Industries to increase the size and flexibility of the fleet.
