MTA NYCT Subway, C Division, Pump Train, PC04 P8005, HL 005, Dyre Avenue, Bronx, New York
Pump Train To Dyre Avenue. In December, 2025, Brookville Equipment Corporation completed rebuilding the first of two "A Car" (with operating cab) pairs of Kawasaki R110A cars to be used with the Pump Train, and they were delivered to New York City. For this train, PC04, P8001 (formerly 8001) is the Generator Car, and P8005 (formerly 8005) is the Pump Car. When the 2 five-car sets of R110A cars were delivered in 1993, they served as an evaluation platform for the next generation of New Technology Trains that resulted in the R142 order for the IRT/A Division. After being withdrawn from service in 1998, they sat in storage until the six "B Cars" (no operating cab) were converted to Pump Train "Reacher" Cars. Reacher or hose-reach cars carry the hose from the generator to the pump. The light colored tape will show any place that the cars have touched objects during movement, and is frequently checked during testing. The train is captured during the early morning hours of May 18, 2026, during what is likely a unique visit to Dyre Avenue in the Bronx, New York on the 5 Line.

In the NYC Subway, Pump Trains are used to remove water from flooded tunnels and open-cut areas. While employed in high-profile events like Hurricane Sandy, they are also put to work during water main breaks and other incidents. The first flood mitigation equipment purchased by the City of New York, Car 56, was part of the R3 order (part of the R9 class) and is preserved by the New York Transit Museum. The pump equipment currently in use centers around the 3 Kawasaki-built R65 cars (PC01-PC03), and uses veteran SMEE cars as reachers and flat car-mounted generators. Like all work equipment, this train meets the narrower IRT/A Division clearance envelope and can be used anywhere on the system.

The Wabtec WAB6HYB/R-255 is a 675hp hybrid work locomotive designed for the demands and clearances of the New York City Subway system. The diesel engine charges the batteries, which will allow the locomotive to operate for 8 hours. This will allow a new generation of locos to pull work trains through the subway with a much lower level of emissions. Before this order arrived, the MTA NYCT Subway rostered 90 diesel engines that operate on non-revenue work trains, and is adding this 25-unit order of R-255s, as well as a supplemental 45-unit order, and the 10 R-77Es under conversion to R-257s by CAD Railway Industries to increase the size and flexibility of the fleet.
