Vintage Work Equipment. On the night of July 30, 2026, MTA NYCT Subway B Division Work Train 15 passed through the 181st Street Station (A Line) in New York, New York, looking much like a museum train. It consisted of D054 (R41, GE, 45T, 1967–1968), 0F184 (R49, Maxon, 1972), and RD342 (R71, ex-R22 7397, St. Louis, 1958). The diesel, D054, is from the second order of general work diesels purchased by the then-New York City Transit Authority; at the time, the fleet numbered in the single digits. As of 2026, the MTA NYCT Subway rosters more than 100 work locomotives, with more deliveries in the pipeline. The last car, RD342, is designated as a deicer but was being used here as a rider car.

The R21/R22 class was distinctive for its square, drop-down storm door windows. Two rebuilt R22s have been preserved: 0I714 (ex-7422), which was converted to an R95 Revenue Collection Car and is now in the New York Transit Museum collection, and R71 7371 at the Seashore Trolley Museum. Several other R22s still operate in work service on pump trains as "Reacher Cars." Shortly after this train passed, a seven-car museum train moved through the station, and most of its cars were built later than the diesel and rider car on Work Train 15. The last R21 and R22 cars operated in revenue service on December 30, 1987, supplanted by the R62/R62A cars.
