When the first Pullman Standard R46 cars entered service on July 14, 1975, there were high hopes for the 754 units—the largest single order ever placed for New York City Subway cars. Although problems with their trucks developed shortly thereafter and necessitated emergency repairs, it was their full General Overhaul by Morrison-Knudsen from 1990 to 1992 and their subsequent involvement in the Scheduled Maintenance System (SMS) program that allowed them to last over five decades. May 3, 2025, was a great day to head out to the Rockaways during a scheduled closure of the South Channel Bridge to ride the R46s on the Rockaway Shuttle. The cars followed the old "H Line" pattern from Rockaway Park–Beach 116th Street to Far Rockaway–Mott Avenue via the normally non-revenue leg of Hammels Wye. Since then, the R46s are no longer assigned to the A, having been replaced by R211As, though they do still make occasional appearances as necessary.
