Amtrak 66 AMTK 641 706, Little Hell Gate Bridge, New York, New York
Empire Service Unit in the Empire State. Early in the morning of Friday, May 22, 2026, Amtrak Train 66 was crossing the Little Hell Gate Bridge in New York, New York, led by AMTK 641 (ACS-64, Siemens). Tucked in behind the motor was AMTK 706 (P32AC-DM), one of 18 dual-mode locomotives used by Amtrak to provide Empire Service. This unit recently required mechanical repairs and was transported to Amtrak's Ivy City Shops in Washington DC. It is seen here on the way to Boston, Massachusetts, where it will be added to Amtrak Train 449 (Lake Shore Limited) for the last leg of the trip to Amtrak Albany-Rensselaer, New York. In part because of ongoing East River Tunnel construction, which limits access to Sunnyside Yard, this was apparently deemed the easiest way to return the unit to its home.
