Amtrak 40th Anniversary Exhibit Train
The Last Amtrak F40 to Visit New Haven. On July 16, 2011, the Amtrak 40th Anniversary Exhibit Train visited New Haven, Connecticut, sitting at the platform for the weekend for visitors to enjoy. The train spent several years traveling across the United States as a "museum on wheels" to allow visitors to explore the modern history of long-distance passenger rail travel. The locomotives and cars were all painted in matching "Phase III," easily Amtrak's most recognizable paint scheme. Since the train made its final appearance in 2016, parts of it have been moved into storage or deaccessioned. As of 2026, AMTK 406 and AMTK 85999 are the last active parts of the consist. The presence of any F40 here in the modern era is exceptionally rare, and this is perhaps the last visit this kind of EMD cowl unit made until this year, when the MBTA sent an Inspection Train with a newly rebuilt heritage duo honoring the New Haven and New York Central railroads.
