The Most Versatile Amtrak Order. On February 16, 2019, AMTK 514 (Dash 8-32BWH, GE, 1991) was leading Amtrak Train 280 when it passed by CP 161 in Schenectady, New York, with evidence of the previous days’ snow still on the ground. The Dash 8-32BWH, also known as the P32-8BWH, B32-8WH, or P32-8, could have earned this title by the number of names it has alone. However, in practice, the 20 locomotives from this order proved their versatility by being used in road, yard, and work service over the decades. Based on the standard “off-the-shelf” General Electric road freight unit design, and featuring 3,200 horsepower, a 1,800-gallon fuel tank, Head End Power, and a view that can only be observed from a freight or switch-type locomotive, the B32 proved itself incredibly reliable. Its 74:29 gear ratio results in a maximum operating speed of 103 mph, making it an optimal locomotive for most of Amtrak’s runs, though its acceleration lags behind that of a standard P32AC-DM/P42DC locomotive. Today, the acceptance of the Siemens ALC-42 order has caused the retirement of many of the venerable locomotives of this class.
