Go See The Legacy Acela While You Can. As Amtrak starts to operate more of its Northeast Corridor Line Acela Trains with Acela 2 sets, its legacy Acela sets are seeing an increased rate of failure and are not being returned to service. On Saturday, January 10, 2026, Amtrak 839 was a non-revenue run with AMTK 662 (ACS-64) towing Acela Train Set 12 (AMTK 2006/2037) from Boston, Massachusetts, to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The train is seen crossing the Mianus River in Cos Cob, Connecticut. This set had experienced operational problems more than a month and a half ago, and had been in Boston undergoing assessment for repair and movement. The Norfolk Southern Chrysler Yard in Newark, Delaware, has been leased by Amtrak to store out-of-service legacy Acela sets, and several have already been brought there pending final disposition.
