Night time is the right time. Duluth, Missabe, and Iron Range Railway 604 (0-10-2, Baldwin, U-108b, 1936) is the largest switch steam engine in the world, its wheel design due to the length of original owner Union Railway’s turntables and desire for a high adhesion, low speed model. Union Railway operated a short but dense traffic route around East Pittsburgh, PA, where this engine was numbered 304. The engineer’s side is painted in tribute to this phase of its life. In 1949 the Union had dropped steam in favor or diesel and sold it to the DM&I, where it would serve another career before being donated to the Greenville Railroad Museum Park in Greenville, PA in 1985. It is seen on display on the night of Wednesday, October 30, 2019.
