DNWP. The area around Byers Canyon was first lined with the tracks of the Denver, Northwestern & Pacific Railway (DNWP) in Hot Sulphur Springs, Colorado by the Colorado River in 1905. The company would eventually be consolidated into the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad, for which the route is known today.
Its "Rio Grande Zephyr" was an Amtrak holdout, as the DRG&W did not join the NRPC until 1983. On March 24, 2022, the present incarnation of that train, Amtrak Train 5 (California Zephyr), passed through the area with Webb Rail's former Northern Pacific Railway Budd built Pullman dome/sleeper 313 (WEBX 801044), former Northern Pacific Railway Budd built dome/coach 549 (WEBX 801045), and former New York Central Railroad Budd built Pullman obs/diner/sleeper "Babbling Brook" (WEBX 800007) holding the markers as it negotiated the sharp curves that hug the canyon walls.
