The Staten Island Crummies. A dozen years ago today, on April 12, 2014, MTA Staten Island Railway (SIR) cabooses (or crummies, hacks, or buggies...) 620 (ex-LIRR C-96, née-IC #9849, built Illinois Central, 1940) and 607 (Reading Northeastern Caboose design) were sitting in the Clifton Yard, bathing in the morning sun. Their presence on SIR is a remnant of the time that this line was still regulated and operating as a railroad. Until recent years, they had been used on work trains. But it was 1 year and 1 day ago today, on April 11, 2025, 607 was trucked off of the property, just a day after 620, and both were quickly scrapped. Several railroads in New York City still own active cabooses, including the New York & Atlantic Railway, CSX, MTA Metro-North Railroad, and Conrail Shared Assets.
